Q. B. Boydstun Public Library, Ft. Gibson - 1977

Q.B. Boydstun Public Library- 1977

History of the Q.B. Boydstun Public Library

Gayle Ledford, Branch Manager

The Q.B. Boydstun Library is a branch of the Eastern Oklahoma District Library System.   (EODLS) headquarters are located in Muskogee and comprised of 15 branch libraries in six counties.  The Library System was originally formed on a trial basis, funded by the state at no cost to county taxpayers.   Then in 1971 voters passed a two-mill levy to support Muskogee County Libraries.  Ft. Gibson was served with a bookmobile until 1977 when Q.B. Boydstun the town attorney had a major role in obtaining the land for the Library. He also helped to procure the funds to build a library/community center at 200 Hickory.  EODLS then set up the Library with Rhoda Austin serving as Branch Manager.  She resigned in 1978 and Gayle Ledford was hired and is still the Branch Manager today.

In 1992 the library began using the Dynix automated circulation system and card catalog.  The circulation system has been upgraded several times, with a major change to a web-based system in 2002.  The Library also offers computers and several data bases with in-house and remote access for public use.

Computers were first introduced to the library patrons in 1995.  The library only had one computer at that time. Then in 1999 the Gate’s Foundation gave the Library four new computers. The library has six computers for patron uses now with plans to add another four.

Between 1977 and 2001, the Library users and collection had increased so much that the 2400 sq. ft. building was out grown.  So in 2002 the town passed a one million dollar bond to build a new Library at 201 E. South Ave. The staff and local volunteers were able to move the Library into a new 5700 sq. ft. building in 2004.  This new building, along with a great location in town has helped to increase our circulation and to provide a space for the library to offer programs.

The Library is open 44 hours a week. Monday through Thursday 9 to 6, Friday 9 to 2 and Saturday 9 to 12.
